Two Sides of the Same Coin: Naturism, Sexuality, and Walking Pride Nearly Naked

Will revisits his most honest post yet: naturism and being a sexual being are two sides of the same coin. Plus why he'll walk nearly naked at Taiwan Pride (Oct 31) and Kaohsiung Pride (Dec 5), and the consent, respect and legality rules he holds to while doing it.

A bare-chested man with glasses stands confidently with arms crossed in a dark wooded park at night, his erect penis visible against a backdrop of silhouetted trees and benches, conveying quiet defiance and natural vulnerability in an ethereal moonlight glow.

I wrote this post once before. The first version was careful. Too careful. I kept the two halves of myself in separate rooms, worried that if I let them touch, someone would accuse me of smuggling sex into naturism or naturism into sex. So this is the retake.

The coin

I'm a naturist. I take my clothes off where it's allowed — beaches, clubs, saunas, my own living room on a Tuesday afternoon. I like how air feels when there's nothing between it and me. I like that nobody at a naturist gathering cares what your body looks like, because every body there is just a body, being ordinary, drinking tea, arguing about the tide.

I'm also a sexual being. Not instead of. Alongside. The same skin that feels sun feels touch. The same body that walks a naked forest trail on a Saturday morning is a body that desires and is desired.

For decades the standard naturist line has been: nudity has nothing to do with sex. I understand why. When strangers assume your club is an orgy, "nothing to do with sex" is the fastest shield you can pick up.

But it isn't quite true, and I'd rather be accurate than safe.

Naturism isn't sexual. We don't gather in order to arouse each other. That part is solid, and it's worth saying out loud. What's false is the implication that a naked person stops being a sexual person the moment the clothes come off. My sexuality doesn't leave the room when my shirt does. It just isn't the point of the room.

Not the point and not present are two different things.

Two sides of the same coin. You can't spend one without the other sitting in your pocket.

Why I stopped pretending otherwise

Denial has a cost, and I've paid some of it. When we insist that nudity is entirely blank of desire, we hand the whole subject over to the people who profit from shame. They get to define what a bare body means, and they define it as porn. Then we spend our whole lives flinching at ourselves.

Honesty also makes etiquette work. Naturist spaces stay non-sexual because everyone there knows desire exists and agrees to set it aside for the afternoon. Boundaries are only real if there's something to bound. "No touching" means nothing in a room where nobody wants anything.

And honestly? Admitting I'm a sexual being made me a calmer naturist, not a worse one. Less performance. Less posturing about how pure I am. Just a man in his own skin, being all of it.

Where you can see this in person

Two dates coming up.

Taiwan Pride, October 31. Kaohsiung Pride, December 5.

I'll be walking nearly naked. Legally covered — I've read the local rules, I know where the line sits, and I stay on the correct side of it. Covered enough to be lawful, unapologetic enough to be visible. That combination is the whole point. If I'm going to argue that a body can be public without being obscene, I should probably show up and be one.

Pride matters to me here because body shame isn't only a naturist problem. It's everyone's. It's the kid who won't swim, the adult who undresses in the dark, the person who apologises out loud for existing at a certain weight. Pride is one of the few places where a body gets to be public, political and ordinary at the same time.

A few things I hold to when I do this:

  • Consent first. Nobody has to look, nobody has to be photographed. If you don't want to be in someone's frame, you don't get argued with.
  • Respect the crowd. Families, kids and people who came for a completely different reason are all standing next to me. Warm and easy beats loud and invasive.
  • Stay inside the law. Whatever local rules say, that's the floor I work from. I'm not interested in getting arrested to prove a point about freedom.

If you're new to all this

You don't have to agree with me. Plenty of naturists genuinely experience their nudity as completely separate from their sexuality, and that's their truth — I'm not here to overwrite it. I'm only saying that for me, the two have always shared a spine, and pretending otherwise made me a slightly dishonest man standing on a very nice beach.

If that lands somewhere in you, you're welcome here. Curiosity is enough to start.

Thank you for being here with me on this naked journey.

Come say hi at Taiwan Pride or Kaohsiung Pride. I'll be the one with the terrible tan lines and the good mood. #TaiwanPride #KaohsiungPride #naturism

The line I cut from the first version: "nudity has nothing to do with sex" is a shield, not a truth. Happy to hear where other naturists land on this — some of you experience it very differently, and I want that in the comments too.
